October 2026 steel outlook: what ferrosilicon buyers can actually use

← News

Buyer takeaway: The World Steel Association’s 12 October 2026 outlook expects global steel demand to be broadly flat this year and grow in 2027. That is relevant to ferrosilicon planning because steelmaking is a principal use of ferrosilicon. It is not, however, a ferrosilicon price forecast. Buyers should use the regional picture to test their own consumption plans, not to infer a guaranteed alloy shortage or price move.

What changed in the October forecast?

Worldsteel’s October 2026 Short Range Outlook, released on 12 October, puts 2026 global steel demand at 1,722 million tonnes, essentially unchanged from 2025. It forecasts 1.7% growth in 2027 to 1,752 million tonnes. Its April outlook had projected modest 2026 growth and 2.2% growth for 2027, so the updated view is more restrained.

The global average also hides different purchasing environments. Worldsteel forecasts Chinese steel demand to contract by 2.0% in 2026, while demand outside China grows by 1.5%. It projects 2027 growth outside China of 4.0%. These are forecasts based on information available in early September 2026, not confirmed orders for any particular mill or ferroalloy supplier.

Why this matters to a ferrosilicon buyer

Ferrosilicon producer Elkem describes steelmaking as a principal use of FeSi, including deoxidation and alloying. That link makes the steel outlook useful context. It does not establish a one-to-one conversion from tonnes of finished steel demand to tonnes of FeSi purchased: melt practice, grade, recovery, inventories and the mix of steel and foundry work still matter.

For an importer, the practical question is therefore local: has your plant’s production plan changed, and is your supplier quoting the exact grade and delivery window you need? A global forecast alone cannot answer either question.

Three checks for the next purchasing cycle

  • Separate forecasts from purchase orders. Compare the outlook for your customer market with confirmed production schedules before increasing coverage.
  • Keep the specification fixed when comparing offers. Silicon content, relevant impurity limits and size distribution can change what two “FeSi” prices actually buy. See our chemistry-check FAQ.
  • Ask for a dated supply plan. Confirm the grade, quantity, packing and shipment milestone for your particular order rather than assuming an industry forecast predicts your supplier’s lead time. Our ferrosilicon product range is a starting point for a specification discussion.
