Buyer takeaway (29 October 2026): Elkem’s third-quarter release says weak selling prices still weighed on its Silicon division, even as the company reported a modest increase in silicon prices during the quarter. These are Elkem’s reported conditions, not a published price for every grade, origin or destination. Use the release to frame questions for suppliers, not to replace a current quotation.
What Elkem reported today
In its 29 October announcement, Elkem said Silicon division operating income was NOK 2,142 million, down 9% year on year, and divisional EBITDA fell 43%. The company attributed pressure to low commodity sales prices. It also said silicon prices increased modestly in the third quarter and had continued to rise in the fourth quarter. Those statements can coexist: a recent improvement does not erase a weak year-on-year comparison.
The same release describes stronger results at Elkem Foundry Alloys. That is a separate division and should not be read as evidence that every ferrosilicon offer has the same price trend. The announcement also discusses EU trade measures and Elkem’s expectations; an expectation is not an enacted price change on a buyer’s purchase order.
How to use the signal in an RFQ
- Specify the exact product and chemistry. A broad “silicon” trend does not price a particular silicon metal lot.
- Ask whether the offer is for available material, what its origin is, and how long the quotation remains valid.
- Compare offers on the same delivery basis, inspection scope and payment terms. A percentage movement in a producer’s divisional accounts is not a percentage adjustment to your order.
If a seller cites this release to justify a revised offer, request the actual quotation and lot documents. Our quotation-details FAQ lists the information worth fixing before comparing bids.
Scope: This is a reading of Elkem’s reported quarter, not a claim about Xinrui’s inventory, production, prices or delivery time. It is not a market-wide price forecast.
