BUYER FAQ

When should a steel mill specify low-carbon ferrosilicon?

← Buyer FAQ

Short answer: A steel mill should request low-carbon ferrosilicon when its allowable carbon pickup is tight enough that the planned FeSi addition matters. This is common in some stainless and electrical steel routes, but there is no single carbon limit that suits every plant. The steelmaker must calculate the contribution of the actual lot and approve it against its process specification.

Why silicon percentage is not enough

Ferrosilicon supplies silicon for deoxidation or alloying. It can also introduce carbon and other minor elements. Elkem notes that low- and ultra-low-carbon grades help avoid reintroducing carbon during stainless and electrical steelmaking. Its stainless-steel guidance also highlights attention to aluminium and titanium for inclusion control. A quote for “FeSi75” says little about those limits unless they are written into the specification.

A practical purchasing check

  • Ask the plant for its maximum allowed carbon addition at the point where FeSi is charged, not merely the final steel carbon target.
  • Confirm the planned FeSi mass and its lot-specific carbon result. For an initial mass-balance screen, multiply addition mass by measured carbon fraction; actual recovery and process effects require the plant’s own assessment.
  • List any limits on Al, Ti and other residuals that matter to the steel grade. Compare complete analyses, not just Si content.
  • Agree the sampling method, acceptable lot variation and trial or approval route before changing supplier or grade.

A low-carbon label without a stated maximum, method and lot document is not enough. Equally, a standard FeSi lot is not automatically unsuitable: the answer depends on the mill’s carbon budget and addition rate. Our quotation FAQ lists the information a supplier needs for a comparable offer.

Scope: This explains how to frame a specification; it does not claim that any particular Xinrui lot is low-carbon or approved for stainless or electrical steel.
